Environmental Sustainability

Hydrochloric acid recycling facility

ChunYu is the only one have the waste hydrochloric acid recycling facility of its kind in Taiwan. It began operations in 1996, at a time when external acid washing plants lacked the capability to handle waste hydrochloric acid.

For the social welfare, ChunYu applied to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) for a second-class waste hydrochloric acid treatment license to assist the industry in addressing this waste management issue.

The facility uses advanced calcination technology to completely decompose and recycle waste hydrochloric acid, thereby preventing secondary pollution. The recovered hydrochloric acid can be reused, achieving sustainable resource utilization.

Wastewater Treatment Facility

ChunYu established wastewater treatment facilities in 1990 to collect wastewater generated during the manufacturing process. This wastewater undergoes chemical oxidation-reduction processes to produce sludge, effectively removing pollutants. The treated clean water is then discharged into environmental water, ensuring the sustainable use of water resources.

一、Raw Materials and Waste Management

Raw Material Usage

The company's raw materials in 2022 increased compared to the previous year, reflecting growth in sales volume. In 2022, ChunYu's total consumption of raw materials was 101,528 tons, of which 55,173 tons came from E-SHENG Steel, 7,033 tons from Dragon Steel, and 5,112 tons from FENG HSIN Steel. The raw materials from E-SHENG, Dragon Steel, and FENG HSIN were all from electric arc furnace steel mills, which are recycled and reused materials. The company's raw material usage is shown in the following table:

Waste Management

ChunYu's waste can be categorized into three main types: general business waste, recyclable waste, and hazardous business waste. In 2022, the total amount of waste generated was 11,740.23 tons, a decrease of 20.82% compared to the previous year. Further statistics on waste indicate that in 2022, the total amounts of general business waste, recyclable waste, and hazardous business waste were 2,222.68 tons (18.93%), 3,625.41 tons (30.88%), and 5,892.14 tons (50.19%), respectively. ChunYu handles some of its hazardous business waste, specifically waste acid washing liquid, through in-house treatment and reuse, as well as by commissioning licensed treatment operators for reuse, allowing hazardous waste to achieve the goal of recycling. The hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated by the company is shown in the table below:

二、Water Resource Management

Water Usage Assessment

Due to the ongoing intensification of global warming, water resources have become a focal issue of concern for various countries. ChunYu is also concerned about whether factory operations impact water resources.
According to the "Water Resource Risk Assessment Tool" WATER RISK ATLAS by the World Resources Institute, the water resource risk assessment result for our company located at No. 100, Dabaojie, Gangshan District, Kaohsiung City, is classified as medium to low risk, indicating that the company's water extraction does not have a significant impact on local water sources. The water usage of ChunYu over the past three years is as follows:

三、Energy Management

The energy consumption of ChunYu over the past three years is shown in the table below. The main reason for the differences compared to 2020 is the increase in production and product output, which has led to a corresponding rise in on-site energy usage. Scope 4:Purchased electricity uses the electricity

emission factors announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs Energy Bureau, with the 2019 electricity emission factor = 0.509 kg CO2e; and the electricity emission factors for 2020 and 2021 = 0.502 kg CO2e.

Air Pollution Prevention

The company has compiled the differences in emissions over the past three years, with the main reason being the increase in production capacity, which has led to a slight rise in various air pollutants. However, overall emissions still comply with standards and have not caused significant environmental harm. Moving forward, the company will continue to work towards pollution reduction goals. The factory does not emit substances that deplete the ozone layer through its discharge pipes (such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), 1,1,1-trichloroethane, halon bromides (HBFC), and methyl bromide). The testing items are as follows: Particulate Matter (PM)、 Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)、 Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)、 Carbon Monoxide (CO)、 Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)、 Ozone (O3), The results indicate that while there has been an increase in emissions due to higher production, all pollutants remain within acceptable limits, and the company remains committed to minimizing its environmental impact.
